All too often, the bathroom is regarded as simply a room where you shower or bathe, and little thought is given to its appearance and the ways in which it can really be used. But the bathroom can be your own little private sanctuary, a place where you can go and escape! After a long hard day’s work, there’s nothing better than have a place where you can relax the stress away and rejuvenate your spirits.
There aren’t many places in your home where you can actually escape the rest of the family. Young children are seemingly always underfoot and it can be hard to get time to yourself. It’s really important to find a little time to unwind. The perfect place to escape can be the bathroom, but you need to create the right atmosphere.
Get Rid of That Cold, Sterile Look
Is your bathroom plain, looking like no more than just a bathroom? Often there are stainless-steel towel racks and toilet-paper holders—the works! There’s nothing fancy; everything is pretty basic and straightforward. If this is your bathroom, then here’s where you need to start!
There are many ways to soften the look. Start by adding wrought-iron towel racks or white or pastel-colored wood. Lavender, sea foam, or another soft, relaxing shade is perfect for the walls. In terms of flooring, two great options are carpet and colorful ceramic tiles. You should especially consider updating your floors is your linoleum is plain-looking or hardly noticeable.
Mirror, Mirror on the Wall
Sometimes, a large bathroom mirror can look a little stark. Does your mirror just hang there with nothing around it? Then perhaps it’s time to make a change. As an alternative, hang a mirror trimmed with gold edges or place wallpaper border around it. To create an interesting look, use a border that contrasts with the color of the walls. You might even think about changing the shape of your mirror completely. For instance, by adding an oval mirror you can create a romantic look.
Decorate the Tub
If you’re lucky enough to have a garden tub or one with wide edges, why not spruce it up? Greenery looks wonderful set around the edges. For instance, small ceramic pots filled with herbs and greenery will make your tub look especially inviting. With the addition of a few votive candles, you’ll be ready to float your worries away in a tub filled with bubbles and surrounded by the delicious scent of candles. There’s nothing quite like filling the tub, lighting a few candles, and bathing in a warm candlelight glow.
Accents Pull It All Together
The best way to pull your new bathroom all together is with a few accents. An oblong or square basket to hold a few bath towels makes the perfect touch. If you have the room, add a small table painted a contrasting color and decorated with stenciled flowers and greenery around the edges. Add some clear glass containers to hold cotton balls, Q-tips, and other items. Attractive body splash and lotion bottles make great accent pieces as well. Of course, you can also add more plants and more candles—whatever it takes to make it your own.
A room that’s exquisitely beautiful and smells heavenly makes bathing so much more relaxing. Then there’s no need to jump in and out of the tub. Instead, you can take the time to relax, unwind, and thoroughly enjoy yourself. All you need is your favorite book or magazine and a glass of wine, and this can be the most peaceful part of your day. Remember, bathrooms don’t have to be boring.
