DIY Home Improvement Is Big Business

In today’s economy, many people are choosing to renovate, rather than sell their homes. In an effort to save money, they are choosing to do the work themselves rather than hire a contractor. The popularity of such television shows as “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” have made do-it-yourself (DIY) a national trend.

DIY has always been a popular option but it became an industry of its own back in the 1950s. Home improvement stores began springing up as people began moving out to the suburbs. It gave people a sense of independence to use their own skills and tools to create the home of their dreams. That sense of independence has continued to this day.

Today’s popular DIY projects include plumbing work, electrical, painting, and deck building. There are many books, magazines and websites devoted to telling readers how to plan for and complete projects. Home improvement stores and community colleges often give free or low-cost classes in how to lay tile, hang wallpaper or install shelving.

HomeTips.com and HouseNet are popular websites for the do-it-yourselfer because they give instruction and link to other websites where visitors can purchase all the materials needed. This saves the frustration of repeated trips to the store for that one missing or wrong-sized part. There are many other websites available. If there is a project you can think of, there is a website that addresses it.

The most important thing is to plan before you start anything. Get cost estimates and time estimates then multiply by 10. It will always cost more and take longer than you planned. Also, check and recheck colors, sizes and capacities. Will you really like that shade of green? Will that shelf fit in that corner? Will a metal kitchen cabinet match the rest of the decor? As the saying goes, “Measure twice, cut once.” Make sure you understand all directions. If you want, pantomime the instructions as you read them to make sure you know how it is done. Read power tool instructions very carefully and follow all safety precautions.

Of course, when you do it yourself, there’s always the risk of doing it wrong. That’s why it may be a better option to hire a professional to do the task or finish it. By the same token, we all want our dream house but work and family commitments make it impossible to do the work needed. Hire a general contractor and he or she can find the electricians, carpenters and other professionals to do the work. It may cost more, but it can save your sanity in the long run.

Just be careful: Ask neighbors or friends if they know any reputable people to do the work. Check references and insist on proof of liability insurance. And always get a signed contract before starting any work.

Whether you do it yourself or hire someone, now is a great time to get started making your home your dream home.
