Staring at a blank wall can cause you to feel overwhelmed and in search of wall decorating ideas. There are many ways that you can take a big wall space and transform it into a cozy space that fits your personality.

Here Are Some Very Good Wall Decorating Ideas For Your Home

Always start with a fresh canvas. The fastest way to improve the look of any wall is to give it a coat of paint. Fresh paint covers up imperfections and gives you a clean place to begin. If you don’t have a specific color in mind, try choosing neutral colors such as tan or gray that can go with many things.

If you have a large space to fill, you have many options. Large mirrors can open up a room and give your wall a finished look. Large artwork or family photos can also warm a space and give it a special touch.

Fabric wall hangings can also cover a large space and give an elegant touch. You can make your own by using a curtain rod and a large piece of fabric that coordinates with your room. This is as simple and inexpensive way to decorate a room.

If you have many family photos, try framing them in similar frames and making a wall collage using the framed photos. Nothing decorates a space better than pictures of those you love. For an artistic look, have the photos printed in black and white. They’ll all coordinate even though they are all very different.

For smaller spaces on the wall, you can look for small pieces of art. Small plates can also be hung on a wall. A few coordinating plates hung by simple grosgrain ribbon can add a warm touch to a small corner.

Interesting objects can also make beautiful wall art. For example, hanging a large musical instrument can add a very elegant piece to your room. A beautiful rug can also be made into a wall hanging. Quilts and other homemade art projects can be beautiful additions to a room.

For a more whimsical look, try making art with your children. Give them several paint colors and paper and let their creativity soar. You can frame several of your children’s artistic creations and hang them in the room. Voila! You have a modern art collection.

All of these wall decorating ideas can help to personalize your home.

A blank wall can be very overwhelming. But even if you’re not an expert, these wall decorating ideas can get you started on personalizing your space.

All natural elements, including real wood, wool, natural cotton as well as plaster walls just about all feature strongly with this particular home decorating style. The particular colors used are normally seen in mother nature.

You should not wallpaper but paint all of your walls, applying paint from the colors of grass, the seaside and also sunshine. To carry out your design, should you have a hearth it ought to be rock. Should you have a big room or living area, then large furnishings are definitely a typical element of this design.

French Country Decor Derives Its Colors From Nature

As I have said, generally colors used for French country decor are mainly the ones that are derived from the outdoors and in addition to the standard lavenders together with gold, some actually choose to use diluted blue and dark green along with a deep red knowing that each one definitely helps to give you a fashionable and also an informal appearance. Choosing reds as well as greens will help to perk up the room, though for a neutral outcome you could choose gray or perhaps black.

Viewed as a romantic interior decorating style and design, French Country decor also has been showcased in all of the very popular decorating magazines during the last several years. Although French Country interior decor came from very humble origins, a number of trendy interior designers have fallen deeply in love with it and even insist upon including French Country in their own homes.

As part of your product selection, you’ll discover basic French Country decor for your kitchen, your dining room, your bedroom and even your bathroom. Discover French country design iron accent furnishings, typical French Country design metal and iron wall decorations as well as beautiful French country pottery decorative accents for old world, Mediterranean French Country style decor.

French Country home decorating is normally rustic, but still having a subtle style. Color strategies will usually compliment and bring to mind home gardens and landscapes, and even space must be used very carefully so as to keep things comfortable, yet organized. There is absolutely no one correct way to implement French Country decor, however there are tips and hints to keep you on track.

In picking French Country designs and styles, attempt to find dull colors. The actual color palette in French Country interior decorating and French Country furnishings are usually different hues of weak reds, greens, along with rustic, flat golden yellows. Typically there are also pastels normally present in French Country decor for example pinks, lavenders, blues, and even pale yellows. Very soft pastels are ideal for walls facing a dark colored background.

The advantage of French Country furniture pieces is that it really is difficult to make a mistake with just about anything no matter if it is mismatched styles or simply colors. You can get done exactly what you really feel like accomplishing and yet flow in the style of French Country decorating provided you are displaying a casual environment.

French Country decor is really favored by decorators simply because it mixes old world, traditional materials together with comfortable furniture pieces that really work with nearly any home design.

Some kind of aged overall look is extremely important to French home decor, however even newer items will provide the look of very old, family antique furnishings when they’re painted using the appropriate process. Real antiques succeed beautifully combined with French country decor simply because you work with such a wide variety of colors and materials together with typical accessories that even by simply using a few select components will give your home the polished appearance you have been seeking.

A whole lot of variables help make up the high quality of an interior design training course, however if you are truly interested in checking out interior design schools standings, Design Intelligence Magazine, a monthly journal created through the Design Futures Council, has a yearly report of leading colleges in the areas of architecture along with interior design that are available to subscribing colleagues. Design Intelligence also publishes America’s Best Architecture & Design Schools, an advanced view of the best architecture colleges and also the best interior design schools and even applicable design training programs. Provided in this publication are interior design standings along with honors.

The very best interior design schools are receiving increasingly more application forms every year for admittance to their training programs which explains why the subject is so very competitive.

Currently there are lots of students making an application for a single position in a training course which might be limited in overall size stemming from very little staff members along with very little room. Besides, there are such large numbers of gifted participants that it typically depends on their student portfolios which usually show just what was undertaken in high school or perhaps trade school.

The best interior design schools are normally those that have by far the most graduates and also the most impressive employment rank upon completion of training programs. Obviously it can be hard to get access to this specific content because it is generally thought to be private, nevertheless you will certainly notice high scoring institutions bragging about their graduating rank and this is often the best way to discover a really good university.

Usually the best interior design schools aren’t only going to concentrate on the primary competencies required to do a job. They’re going to have a lot of mandatory programs that can help equip you for coping with the corporate environment for example like business values, marketing strategies, drawing plus much more. Most of these colleges are a lot like conventional four-year schools since you are likely to take requirement training courses such as sketching as well as color theory in order to take the key instructional classes in your desired concentration.

Non-academic criteria definitely play a huge role in selecting the best interior design schools for your needs.

Excellent interior design colleges traditionally also give you internships or perhaps job positions at interior design companies, that would give you important on-the-job practical knowledge, and this also really should always be explored by every potential college student. The interior design college’s amenities together with services that will be supplied to college students for their use ought to absolutely factor into a future scholar’s choice when attempting to identify the best interior design schools.

Sharp applicants understand that selecting the very best interior design institution for their requirements demands thoughtful deliberation as well as a great deal of study. Although submitted rankings of the very best interior design schools is often a very good place to begin, many other essential aspects really should be given equal contemplation.

Rich in antique colors the persian area rug is heavy with intricate weaving, the many colors and motifs where you can get lost in the diversity. Hand woven in many countries around the world such as Iran, Pakistan, Turkey and Afghanistan and other orient countries.

The artistic nature of the persian rug is extremely beautiful because they are woven by hand. Persian rugs are a top choice to many people around our world and people will pay any price they have to beautify their home.

Persian rug s created nowadays are mostly made by the use of automated machines, however you can still find the hand woven ones, they have more value of course so they cost much more than the machine created carpets. In Iran carpet weaving is the number one craft of the country. Carpets made in Iran are full of rich colors and created with very artistic patterns. A Persian area rug can be found all around the world in famous buildings, mansions and museums. If you are the owner of a persian carpet you have a most treasured possession.

Back in 2002 over $500 million dollars worth of hand woven carpets were exported from Iran, and in 2005 over $600 million. Excuding oil, the persian area rug was the No one export for Iran. There are over 5 million people employed in Iran to produce these beautiful carpets.

The most common type of material used in the production of the carpet would be wool, but they also use cotton in the production process as well for the foundation of the carpet used for cities and office buildings. The type of wool they use would be Manchester wool or Kork wool, and there are times when camel hair wool is used.

Another type of woven carpet is the silk carpet but they are less durable and more expensive. As time passes the silk carpet goes up in value. Because silk carpets don’t hold up very well they are purchased, and used as a wall decoration, instead of placing it on the floor. Silk carpets can be traced back to the sixteenth century.

The patterns you see in the Persian carpet have a name, they are called a motifs and the designs used in the carpet have special meanings, ususally referring to the area it was created in. However you can find multiple motifs in one carpet. The Boteh, Gul, Herati, Mina-Khani, Rosette and Shah Abbasi are the most common motifs.

The Persian carpet embodies the Culture and life style of the people of Iran, they are a valuable piece of art. Taking about ten months to create they become a timeless piece of art. The perfect Carpet for your living or dinning room.

Taking into consideration the Interior Design of a Home(Decoração de Interiores da casa)

Someone once said that there are no place like home. But do you still call your home a property whether it is not conducive for living or that but there’s more provide comfort? The interior design Algarve can considerably affect the daily lives from the occupants.

If the home is topsy-turvy all the time, you will rather be outside. Imagine what it would be like once you come home tired and the house is a total mess. Rather than feeling calm, you’re mood are going to be additional irritated. When you come home in an exceedingly neat and clean home, you’ll feel laid back and comforted with the welcoming ambiance.

Since interior design matters, property owners needs to have enough information in interior design Algarve (Decoração de interiores). If they just don’t develop the inclination, they can choose a professional interior designer. Whether the design will depend on personal desire or professionally designed, your property must be designed in way that must be inviting and welcoming.

The Role of Furniture

Probably the most important parts in the interior design Algarve is a choice of furniture. Planning an empty room are only about a choice of colors with the wall or sorts of wall. But it will have a new aura or environment of the room if your proper furniture design Algarve (Design de mobiliário) is employed. For instance, a space filled with antique furniture looks vintage. If your homeowner prefers to acquire such theme from the room, he then may think of buying numerous antique furniture packages ( mobiliário antiguidades).

Choosing Furniture

Furniture will come in different shapes, shapes, forms, and materials. You may tend to buy an aluminum dining set in your dining area. Or perhaps you can pick to order a sofa created from bamboo with cushions. You can even choose an oval-shaped sofa. Your option ought to be influenced by the room, the convenience it provides, and the beauty it adds.

Space. This determines the furniture design Algarve you must choose. When you have small living area, it’s essential to not select big furniture sets. The oval shaped sofa you’ve seen online might be attractive but it does not fit in the corner of the empty space with your room. When buying furniture, you should consider first if they fit inside available space or otherwise.

Convenience. Most furniture design packages in Algarve is employed for comfort and comfort of user whether it is made of wood, aluminum, or steel. It’s essential to know what is comfortable in your case. A sofa bed could possibly be suitable for your family room because you can alter your living space to bed space during nighttime.

Beauty. Naturally, beauty is around the form. As you consider the function in the furniture design Algarve, you must also think of if it looks good while in the room. A red side table may well not work well from a bedroom with blue motif. A blue sofabed as part of your lounge may not work well under a bright yellow wall. When it comes time a furniture package in Algarve, it must make the room look neat and clean as opposed to rendering it look more untidy due to mismatched colors and types of furniture.

You could find different furniture in virtual stores to see which fits these considerations. You may also imitate the interior design Algarve (Decoração interiores) displayed generally in most online furniture shops.

If you are looking to transform a plain house into a beautiful home then you need to think about adding a collection of home accessories to each room. Home accessories are a great and cost effective way of creating a theme and vibe for each room. To create a room that is a pleasure to be in just follow these simple rules. One point to note though is that you don’t want too many accessories or your room will simply look messy. You can achieve a really classy look without too much expense.

As the living room is used daily by all family members the first rule when buying accessories is to compromise. For example, your husband may prefer the look and feel of a masculine sofa, rather than a patterned fabric couch. Decorating should be the first step when updating the look of the room as this forms the basis of the colour and style palette. If you are struggling to decide which furniture and colour scheme to go with why not let the female choose the furniture and the male choose the colour scheme? You don’t want your living room to look like everyone elses, so by mixing your tastes you will stand a better chance of creating a unique room setting. Don’t forget that even if you live alone you should have a good mix of masculine and feminine accessories and furniture, as this creates a more welcoming atmosphere for guests of the opposite gender.

Allow the space offered by the room to be the dominating feature. If you clutter it up with furniture or accessories it will look small and messy. If you clutter your living space you will lose any central focal point, which confuses the theme of the room. By choosing just a few, key pieces of furniture and a handful of accessories you are more likely to create a real sense of space. If you display your accessories correctly even the smallest items can make a big impact.

The colour of your paint or the pattern of your wallpaper has an enormous impact on the theme of your living room. Paint is a great way of adding colour to your living room and if you don’t like the result you can simply paint over it with another colour. It is a lovely way of bringing your neutral furniture or floor coverings to life.

The accessories you choose along with your wall coverings will have a major impact to both the look and function of your living room. You can use colour and accessories to create a theme or a just make your room feel more organized and spacious.

How to know if a job in interior design is right for you. Starting out, and moving up in the field. What kind of schooling may be required.

A career field that is becoming increasingly popular is the field of interior design. Many busy people realize how important it is to have a home or office that is professionally decorated, and therefore many new jobs in interior design are being created.

Another important aspect of the field is that interior designers are located in every city, all over the world, so jobs are available just about everywhere. If a young person is creative and has an artistic flair, a career in interior design may be perfect and will provide a long lasting and satisfying job choice.

The first thing one has to know in order to obtain a job in interior design is what kind of education is required. Different areas may require different levels of education, and a job in a design house in a major firm in Manhattan, for instance, may require a four year degree, while working for a small company in the Midwest may only require two years college. Many schools offer degrees in interior design as part of their fine arts department, and a specialized degree such as this would definitely be an advantage.

Starting out, a new graduate would normally work for another person or for an interior design company. A great deal of experience and contacts can be gained in this kind of environment. Working for an experienced interior designer can give a young person invaluable experience in every aspect of this business, and he can learn many things it took the seasoned professional years to learn. Working side by side with an experienced interior designer, the novice will handle mundane tasks such as ordering swatches and following up delivery schedules, but these are important skills to develop.

After working hand in hand with a senior professional, a new interior designer will then be handed an assignment of his own. Having a a company behind him while he hones his own design skills on a customer is a major advantage to a designer just starting out.

The main (and some say only) focus of interior design is customer satisfaction. The client is the be-all and end-all of the field, so the ability to work with people, who sometimes can be very testy, is crucial.

Once a designer has paid his dues, so to speak, at a company or two, he will want to branch out on his own. Besides being more profitable, owning his own interior design firm allows a decorator to put his own creative stamp on the work he is commissioned to do.

If decorating a room or a home is something you have enjoyed doing, consider a career in interior design. It is very rewarding to be able to bring an artistic vision to fruition, and it can be a very financially successful career as well.

It can be a hard task choosing the right decorating styles for your bedroom with the huge selection available. However you should find plenty of inspiration and really it is down to personal preference as to what you finally choose.

Have you been thinking of redecorating your bedroom but you do not have any idea on what style to go for? There is such a massive range to choose from, it can be a very daunting task choosing the best style for your room.

One thing that you should remember is that a bedroom is one place that you should be able to fully relax. Without the right style and balance, it may look cluttered and it can affect the way that you sleep. Also, the furniture needs to be arranged the right way as well to create that great look. If the bedroom looks like any of the other rooms in the house or cluttered, it will keep your mind distracted from relaxing and sleeping.

Do You Need Inspiration When it Comes to Bedroom Decorating Styles?

Finding inspiration for your bedroom is quite easy to come by. You could find ideas that you like in a magazine, on a home improvement show, or even in the shops with a display. The only problem you are faced with is what should you choose for your bedroom and what you think will suit you the best. Everyone has their own tastes but a good thing to go for is a nice relaxing color and not something that is too vivid. Home improvement shows are always a great idea to get the inspiration you need and they even show you how to achieve a certain look which is very handy as well.

Have You Thought of Wallpaper Decorating Styles?

Some people like to paint their rooms and others may decide to go for wallpaper. If you are bored of paint, wallpaper may be a different way of decorating your bedroom. There is once again a huge selection of different wallpapers from the basic to the more luxurious ones which vary in quality and price. But it is better to go for something that is soothing to the eyes and something that will leave you feeling relaxed. It is always best to shop around in order to find the best design for your bedroom.

Stuck For Bedroom Decorating Style Ideas? Try a Consultant.

You may have looked around and still feel like you are no further forward. If this is the case, it may be worth calling in an interior designer who will be able to help you. There will be a consultation fee but it is worth it especially if you are not going anywhere fast.

Begin the selection process by defining the geographic location, budget, scope and time frame for project completion. You will want to use this information when researching and interviewing potential designers to make sure they are a good fit for your project and your location.

Review the websites of your pool of interior designers. Call the candidates who particularly interest you and ask questions and take notes. Some general questions you should ask:

· How long have they been in business?
· Do they work alone or as a team?
· Do they have a field of specialty?
· Can they give you a client list?
· What is their fee structure and contract requirements?
· What supplier partnerships do they have?
· How skilled are they at negotiating pricing for services and projects?
· Do they have case studies and a portfolio?
· What experience do they have with local building codes and the permit process?
· Do they do handle commercial, residential or both?
· Have they worked on a project similar to yours before?
· How do they handle refunds for furniture and accessories that are not used?
· Can they provide at least three references?

Set-up an appointment with those who received good references and take your notes, sketches and design ideas with you. Pay careful attention to the communication style and personality of the designer. Discuss budget and fees, scheduling, deposits, contracts and other policies. If possible, view other projects that the designer has completed. After you have completed this process review all the information you have gathered and you should find it easy to pick a designer or firm for your project and you can begin to look forward to your design ideas becoming reality.

Don’t only look at designers that have done projects exactly like the one you are looking to do. You want a designer that can create personalized spaces that represent your lifestyle vs. a replica of something they have done before.

The words interior design can strike fear into people wanting to redecorate their own home. They tend to bring to mind images of complicated design themes which have to be created in a certain way – not to mention the large amount of money you need to bring them into being.

But in reality, interior design styles need not be so daunting. Interior design styles are based on themes and periods in time, and use the ideas of designers to re-create styles of the past and bring them into the twenty first century.

How Do You Choose Appropriate Interior Design Styles For Your Home?

Different homes tend to suit different styles, although you should not let this restrict you to a limited choice. There is no reason why you cannot select interior design styles from Victorian times if you live in an ultra modern apartment block, or go for futuristic design themes to spruce up your farmhouse.

In this sense, interior design styles can reveal a lot about who you are, and if you want to surprise people when they walk through your front door, then choosing the styles and themes you have a passion for will certainly tell everyone what you like – and what you don’t like.

Interior design is all about color, form and creation, so it’s worth thinking about the kind of furniture and fittings you love. Which items of furniture are you drawn to when out shopping? What kind of paintings or pictures do you enjoy? How about accessories?

You may well find that you have different ideas in mind for different areas of your home. If you like listening to music you might have ultra modern stereo equipment in your lounge area that you’d like to house in a glass cabinet. Cool clean lines and minimalist furniture that hides everything away out of sight would look very calming here.

Meanwhile you may long for the warmth of a country style kitchen. Many people find that their homes can accommodate a mix of different interior design styles, and in this way they can create different areas for different activities.

Of course if you are obsessed with a particular period in time and you want to deck out your whole house in that theme, you might want to scour flea markets and online auctions to buy genuine items at low prices to complete the look you are after.

Interior design styles can provide you with a whole new hobby – to set your home in an entirely different time period altogether, please visit the following URL http://www.snslamps.com/

Here are the items that you need to help organize your interior decorating ideas and to complete your interior decorating project file:

Pens and Paper – There’s nothing more frustrating than finding a perfect paint or carpet and not being able to write down the particulars for ordering them. Have several pens and pencils tucked in your file and a pad of paper or spiral notebook for taking notes. You may want to make notes of a furniture arrangement, trim detail, or window treatment that you see.

Tape Measure – Try to find a lightweight measuring tape if you can, as a builder’s tape measure can get heavy if you’re carrying it around all day. A 10-foot tape is usually fine for shopping trips, but you’ll want a 25-foot measuring tape to measure rooms, windows, and ceiling heights.

Floor Plan – If you’re doing a room decorating project or a whole-house remodel, you’ll need a drawing of the rooms with measurements. A scaled drawing on graph paper is most useful, but you can have a simple sketch for a smaller project.

Photos of Your Room – Even if you can’t stand how your room looks now, take some “before” pictures. Get all the angles and details. These will be helpful when you’re working on your plan or when you need to talk to a salesperson about your project. They’ll help remind you of details as you’re working.

Calendar – As you proceed with your project, you’ll undoubtedly have schedules to keep. Note when the floors will be measured for carpet, when the plumber is coming, or when you have a date with the painter. You can use your personal daily planner if you have one or keep one separate just for your decorating projects.
Just be sure to have it with you!

Magazine Photos – Magazines are a great source of decorating inspiration. If you see a color you like, a fabric print that is just what you love, or an arrangement of accessories that would work in your space, tear the page out and keep it in your decorating file.

Samples of Fabrics, Colors, and Flooring – As you shop; you’ll want to collect samples of carpet, tiles, flooring, fabrics, and paint chips. The more you have in your Decorating File, the easier it will be to put your project together when you get home. Add more samples with every shopping trip. You may not be replacing everything in the room you’re decorating. Be sure to take a sample of anything that is staying in your room, including carpeting, upholstery fabric, paint samples, tile, or wood.

Phone List – Have a handy list of phone numbers for your carpet man, plumber, painter, upholsterer, or contractor. Keep the list in your Decorating File for easy reference.

Scissors and Tape – When you find the perfect paint chips, you might want to tape them together with fabrics you’ve chosen. Also put together fabric samples and carpet tufts.

Envelopes or Zip-Lock Bags – You never know when you might find some small piece of information, color, or pattern that could get lost if put in the bottom of a tote. Have a few plain #10 envelopes or zip-lock plastic bags in your Decorating File.

Post-It Notes – Simple post-it notes are great for marking pages that you don’t want to lose in a book or magazine. Or use them to mark possible choices in a wallpaper book. If you’re looking at paint chips, block off shades that you don’t want, using a post-it note.

Color Board – Once you’ve made all your choices, put together a color board. Use a piece of mat board, foam core, or cardboard, cut to fit into your decorating file. Paint the board in the color of your chosen wall paint or just leave it white.

You’ll find that it’s fun to put together an Interior Decorating Project File for your decorating projects. It’s a useful tool to keep you organized.

Now that you at least have some idea of where you want to be with your new decorating project, you may be worried about how you will afford what you need. Don’t worry! You can still have a celebrity room with an everyday budget.

When you’re getting ready to begin a decorating or remodeling project it’s a great idea to get everything together. And keep it together! Any building, remodeling, or decorating project will be easier if you get organized before you start with an interior decorating project file.

Your interior decorating project file will hold everything you’ll need to coordinate the project. Include carpet samples, fabric cuttings, paint samples, floor plans, wallpaper cuttings, photos, and pictures of inspiration rooms. Having everything in one place will help the job go more smoothly from conception to completion.

You can choose any style of file you want. The choice is yours. A small canvas tote bag, briefcase, notebook with file pockets, expanding envelope, or file box works well. Be sure you select a container that will be easy to carry from store to home and large enough for all your items.

Probably the most convenient way to keep everything together, and your hands free, is in a tote bag with shoulder handles. Interior pockets are helpful, too. Be sure to have a container for pens, your cell phone, tape measure, scissors, and tape.

Place an expanding folder with pockets and divider tabs into the tote. These pockets will keep projects and items separated and organized. You can keep several projects separate by labeling the folders for each.

You’ll save time by having everything together wherever you go. Instead of wondering whether a paint chip coordinates with a fabric swatch, you’ll know right away.

If you’re shopping for a lamp, you’ll know if the lamp shade is the right color.

If you happen on a wonderful flea market, you won’t have to pass up a great bargain on an antique bureau because you don’t know if it will fit in your space. With everything together: colors, fabrics, measurements, and ideas,– you’ll always be ready!

As you work on a project, you’ll think of things that would be helpful to have in your own interior decorating project file. The most important thing to remember about an interior decorating project file is that you should have it with you at all times.

There are 6 basic elements used in all aspects of interior design and decorating. If you correctly incorporate all or most of these elements you will have created a beautiful and functional room.

Balance
There are two types of balance – symmetrical and asymmetrical. Perfect symmetry is like the human body – two eyes, two arms etc. Symmetrical balance is typically very formal. Asymmetry, on the other hand, refers to an imbalance, perhaps two candlesticks of slightly different sizes placed next to each other. Asymmetry is used to add visual motion and excitement to a space, and therefore it is considered a more informal way of decorating.

Balance also refers to the weight of different objects in a room. This can be the actual weight and size of furniture – such as a large entertainment centre; or it can be visual weight – a patterned or very bold color upholstered piece appears to take up more space than a solid or neutral colored one. If there is too much weight on one side of a room, the arrangement will feel awkward and uninviting.

Color
The human eye can see more than 16 million colors. To simplify your paint choices look at your favorite piece of art, a rug or the upholstery fabric. Choose your colors based on that item using the “60-30-10 rule”.

For example – your favorite painting contains blue, yellow and cream. You might then choose yellow walls (60%), a blue sofa (30%) and a cream accent cushion (10%).

Focal Point
A focal point is the centre of interest – usually the part of the room that our eye is naturally drawn to when we first enter. If you don’t have an existing architectural detail – such as a fireplace or large bay window – you can create a focal point by strategically hanging your art or by creatively displaying some accessories on a bookshelf. Once you have determined or created a focal point in your room, simply arrange your conversation area around it.

Harmony
This does NOT mean that everything should match. It simply means that the furniture, art and accessories compliment each other in some way.

Scale and Proportion
The size of pieces relative to one another and the size of the space is their SCALE. Large, ornate pieces will not look right in a very small room, just as small contemporary pieces will be lost in an oversized space with vaulted ceilings. And more importantly, the size variance of different pieces within a room should be somewhat related.

Texture
Texture is the one element that can instantly add interest to a monochromatic color scheme. Should you choose to decorate an entire room in one color – mocha perhaps – it will be easy to add some visually interesting texture. Linen window shades and leather pillows can be found in the same color range but each has a very different look and feel.

You may have never put a lot of thought into these elements, but when they are put together in a room, they will enhance the room ad make it beautiful!

Taking on an interior design project can be a huge undertaking. Don’t let your vision become compromised. Start by getting organized.

Cool earth tones are a range of colors achieved by mixing white, or pigments from the cool side of the spectrum such as blue and green, with the basic earth colors. Think of cool stone and slate floors, or the washed creams, gray, and pale sand of a seashore on a winter morning, to get the feel of the colors. They create a soothing but elegant ambience of natural beauty in your interior decorating scheme.

Beige, putty, cream, and parchment all make perfect background settings, so the range of paints and papers that falls into this category is enormous. If you choose to paint rather than wallpaper, a number of translucent washes of different colors from this range will give a more natural finish than a flat latex; in earlier times these colors were full of natural impurities and so had interesting variations of shade and depth. You can either continue the same tones throughout the room, or use the walls as a canvas against which to set a richer series of colors.

If you’re using this palette alone in your interior decorating, it’s important to avoid bland, featureless expanses. Texture, pattern, and detail are vital factors and occur naturally in many of the items that you may choose to include in this type of scheme. For rustic earthy textures, use greeny gold rush matting, jute webbing, rough sandstone, and textured weave linens and cottons. Stone busts and urns, limed wood, or reclaimed bleached pine furniture all give character and interest to your decor.

You can also add interest with strong patterns which don’t tend to dominate because the colors are so muted. Look for bold ethnic designs for fabrics and wall hangings, or densely patterned floral or leafy wallpapers in pale olive, straw and mushroom tones. Important details will count for more in this subtle setting – bone buttons, steely gray upholstery studs, a rough twist of raffia around a recycled glass jar all reinforce the picture but break up the sheer planes of color.

The easiest way to find your interior decorating style is to start collecting ideas. Flip through interior decorating magazines or home improvement websites and collect pictures of things that catch your eye like a particular sofa style, a really cool lamp, a wall color, window treatments, a fabric, or maybe just the feeling that the whole room gives you. Make notes right on the pages so you remember why you saved it.

Also, start collecting samples of existing fabrics or colors that are going to stay in the room. For instance, say you’re not changing the carpeting and you want to keep your grandmother’s side chair. See if you can clip a little bit of extra fabric off the chair where you won’t see it. Clip a small square of the carpeting out of a closet. If it’s a painted piece, you can use paint chips from your local paint store to match it as closely as possible and have those with you.

You will also want to take measurements of the room and any furniture that is staying. If you can, make a simple floor plan to scale for reference. And finally, take photos of the room and any of the pieces you will be keeping.

Now as you collect all these samples and notes you will need to organize them in a way that makes sense for you; either by room, or by idea such as furniture ideas, lighting, colors, fabrics, or window treatments. Then keep them in your car so when you are out shopping you won’t have to make another trip back home to see if it’s the right color, size, or if it will “go”. Interior Decorators always have samples with them when they shop.

As you start to collect a fair amount of items you will start to see a pattern or similarity in what you like. And a style, that you didn’t think you had, will soon emerge.

Maybe you want to look through an interior decorating magazine to find a style that appeals to you. That’s fine if you want to copy that style, just be sure that it will work in your house.

Decorating “rules” are made to be broken. Not every project will lend itself to every so-called rule. However, following the rules can help give your project a focus that a more haphazard approach may not. Here are some of the decorating “don’ts”.

Don’t paint your walls then go out looking for fabrics to match. Paint can be mixed in any of a thousand colors, so select the final shades after upholstery, carpeting, and curtain fabrics are chosen.

Don’t paint a room without trying a sample of the color in the room. Tiny paint chips can be deceiving as to tone and depth of color, so always paint a test board to confirm your choices.

Don’t line up the furniture around the walls except in the smallest of rooms. Pulling furniture into attractive groupings in the center of the room will add warmth and be inviting to guests as well.

Don’t turn your back on the focal point of the room by arranging furniture away from this important feature.

Don’t place furniture where it will interfere with doorways, cabinet doors, natural traffic patterns, or other everyday activities.

Don’t clutter up a room with a million little collectibles unless you’re in love with that look. Most of us will feel it is too crowded.

Don’t try to construct a color scheme from wildly disparate objects. First find a print fabric or rug with all of the colors you want to use, then edit out, repaint, or recover items that don’t fit with the plan.

Don’t keep something you hate. Do you have a hideous orange sofa from Aunt Zelda? Either slipcover it, recover, or remove it. You’ll be happier.

Don’t decorate around an item that just isn’t “you”. If your new home came with gold shag carpeting when you love roses and lace, believe me, you’ll never love that carpet. Get rid of it.

Don’t forget the details. If your theme is Mediterranean, look for iron lamp bases, weathered iron drawer pulls, and tile tables. If you love Cottage then use painted white accessories, floral accents, and lace.

Don’t fall in love with cheap furniture just because it has an appealing color or exciting fabric. Look for good lines, quality construction, and elegant details first. Then have those pieces covered in a fabric or finish that you love.

Don’t choose colors standing in a store. Try to take samples (of paint, fabrics, and floor coverings) back to your home and look at them in daylight and at night.

Don’t spend a lot of money on expensive items that are “trendy”. Try out trends that truly appeal to you by experimenting first with inexpensive accessories.

Don’t live with a lot of mismatched furniture orphans. Unite pieces with color — either by painting everything one color (white, pale gold, or black for example) or by recovering everything using identical or a mix of coordinating fabrics.

Don’t always choose backgrounds in your favorite color. Sometimes providing a softer background will make your favorite color stand out as the brightest accent color in the room.

Don’t choose everything beige if you really love color. Remember, color doesn’t cost more than white. Wouldn’t a pretty mango, soft coral, or lovely green wall make a terrific backdrop for your white sofa?

Don’t ignore the mood effects of color — red is exciting, pale blue soothing, green calming, and yellow is happy — so choose color schemes that underscore the feeling you want to create in your home.

Don’t disregard the undertones of a color. Every color can be either light or dark, cool or warm, clear or muddy. Look for these color cues when choosing color.

Don’t blow your entire budget on something that isn’t functional, classic, or long-lasting, unless you’re completely smitten and can’t live without it. In general it’s best to start with the basics and build from there.

The rules of interior decorating can be as solid as a rock or as open to interpretation as the sky. But many experts agree that learning the rules can be the first step toward freely breaking those rules when necessary. Here are some of the decorating dos.

Do sketch your floor plan and record the room dimensions, window sizes and placement, and the location of special features, electrical outlets, and so on. Take your floor plan with you when you shop.

Do take the time to discover your personal style by reading interior design magazines, attending show houses, and browsing online and in stores to learn what styles and colors really appeal to you.

Do identify the focal point of the room (a fireplace, a view, a bed, an armoire).

Do define a room’s style in writing , being specific. (Not just “country French”, but “French Country with a rooster motif, chicken wire cupboard fronts, and a color scheme that includes black and gold.”)

Do pick a signature piece to focus your decorating decisions. It could be a beautiful fabric, an area rug, a picture, a piece of pottery, dishes, or a postcard. The item should embody both the color scheme of the room as well as the style and mood you hope to create.

Do coordinate fabric and flooring choices before making any major purchases, and before choosing exact paint colors.

Do purchase large elements first (rugs, draperies, upholstered furniture) whenever possible, and use the exact colors and style of those major pieces to coordinate all other choices.

Do use a mix of patterns — large-scale, small-scale, checks, stripes, geometrics, plain — when coordinating a room.

Do allow for natural pathways in a room (such as from the door to the closet) and try to arrange furniture with those walkways in mind.

Do consider the uses and function of a room before deciding on furnishings and arrangements. For example, if your dining room will also be your study, then you’ll need room for a desk, books, lighting, and files as well as the dining room table and chairs.

Do consider using unifying elements such as trim color, wood tone, flooring, motifs, fabrics, or materials.

Do use the principle of repetition when planning shapes, colors, fabrics, and patterns. One red accent in a room may look like an afterthought whereas several red accents here and there will contribute to the color scheme.

Do plan ahead for appropriate task, general, and dramatic lighting by using a mix of light fixtures on dimmers for maximum control.

Do purchase the best quality furniture you can afford. Learn more about quality construction and materials that can prolong the life of furniture and make it a better buy in the long run.

Do use contrast to add interest to a space. Placing furniture and accessories against a contrasting background will highlight each piece.

Do crosslink your rooms by repeating colors, fabrics, and themes in varying combinations.

Do balance a room’s furnishings by paying attention to scale and visual weight. Balance a large stone fireplace with a large sofa or armoire placed opposite.

Do arrange conversational areas to be within an 8 to 14 feet square area.

Do anchor spaces in open floor plans with area rugs and furniture groupings to define each space.

Do pair seating in conversation areas with side tables and lamps so that there is a place to set drinks, books, etc. as well as adequate light for reading.

Do choose accessories that reinforce the color and style theme of a room.

Do use scale and pattern to create interesting focal points.

Do use pairs of items to underscore symmetry and balance.

Do use odd numbers of items (3, 5, 7) when grouping accents for table-scapes. Do place items (high, medium, and low) within an imaginary triangle to add interest.

Do use symmetrical arrangements in formal rooms. In more casual rooms go for asymmetrical arrangements of furniture and accessories.

Do emphasize the important elements of the room and play down the unattractive or unimportant elements.

Do use a variety of textures (smooth, rough, shiny, dull) when you want to add interest to a room.

Do use line to underscore a room’s style. Horizontal lines emphasize length and underscore a calm mood. Vertical lines will emphasize height, and diagonal lines emphasize space and provide a dynamic and exciting feel.

Do reinforce the style and theme of a room with appropriate details and accessories.

Do install more details in a plain boxy room. Consider crown molding, wainscoting, and other applications to add interest and character.

Do consider the location of your home and the architectural style when planning interiors.

With its emphasis on hand-crafted natural materials, informality, and simplicity, the country bedroom is stylishly restful and refreshing.

The hallmarks of the country bedroom – natural materials, unfussy and practical furnishings, airiness, restrained but rich color schemes, and a commitment to comfort – create an environment that is perfectly conducive to rest and relaxation at any time of day.

Whether stripped, stained, varnished, or painted, wood features heavily in country schemes as floor and wall surfaces, furniture, and smaller decorative objects. Other natural raw materials such as cane, wicker, and cotton play supporting roles. Colors such as teal blue, creamy yellow, conifer green, and rich Indian red are traditional, used on their own to cover broad expanses of wall, or in small doses to give character to large expanses of white or pale neutrals. Furniture has a timeless practicality, based on a mixture of Shaker simplicity, American Colonial elegance, and a hint of toned down Victorian. Generously stuffed cushions, pillows, and quilts ensure that comfort is high on the list of priorities.

Ornamentation, from stencils to children’s toys, is – in appearance if not in actuality – handcrafted. Likewise, fabrics have a slightly rough, homespun appeal, and patchworks and samplers continue the hand-crafted theme. The country bedroom look is mildly eclectic rather than highly coordinated, but never chaotic – everything has its rightful place.

Learning interior design can be a simple or complicated task depending on a wide variety of factors including exposure, ability, creativity, and willingness to learn. This article is dedicated to explaining the basic elements that interior design is based upon so that you will have the ability to go out and research these elements on your own in order to advance you ability and perspective of the interior design world.

Lets begin with a few suggestions of where to properly conduct your research. A good beginning point for all of those interior design newbies would be television shows dedicated to the subject, books, magazines, other interior design professionals, etc.

Another resource that you have an unlimited exposure to that doesn’t cost you anything but time and focus are your eyes. Your eyes are wonderful tools for learning interior design and successful application of it. They are such terrific tools because eyes are the ears of the interior design symphony. They possess the ability to look upon any element of design and transmit information to your brain concerning the colors indicated in the design, textures, layout, and whether or not the overall effect is pleasing.

If you can master the ability of viewing a particular setting or scenario and delving from it the key elements of its visual success, you are enormous steps forward in your journey of learning interior design.

Find an example of a design setting that is pleasant or pleasing to you. This can be located in a book, magazine, or even in real-life. Close your eyes. Now open them. What do you look at first? The first item that your eyes focused upon is considered to be your focal point.

In television discussions or magazine articles it is sometimes wrongfully alluded to that there is one appointed (by the designer, of course!) focal point. This is simply untrue. For every person that views the room, that person offers a unique perspective.

One person might gaze intently at the fireplace due to the warmth and secure nature of that design element. Another might focus upon the sofa. Yet another person might elevate towards the remote control (ha!).

The point is, is that the focal point of a room is the area of the room that demands your attention upon arrival in it and generally you base your placement of activities that take place in that room on the location the that focal point. This is the reason why so much strategic planning is normally based on the focal points of a room when designing the creative outlay of the room. This is why your fundamental understanding of the focal points of a room is dramatically instrumental in learning interior design.

It is true that certain architectural elements of a room demand more attention then others. I think that this is one of the reasons that many people misunderstand the concept of focal points. Throughout your journey of learning interior design, you will come to understand the importance of balancing the understanding of architecture focal points, and living ones.

Certain people are naturally going to elevate towards different activities and objects in a room. This is why a basic understanding of both the human element and the architectural one are a keystone to successful interior design.

Once you have a basic to medium understanding of focal points and placement of items in and around those places, the other key feature of learning interior design is visual representation of objects.

Color, texture, and shape are the fundamentals in this category. When you view an object, the way that the light is reflected off of it onto your eyes is commonly known as color. Texture is the way that the object ‘feels’ to you visually. Shape is the basic makeup of the object reflected visually. The correct combination of these characteristics results in a visually harmonious atmosphere.

Let’s imagine a few terms you hear when associated with design. ‘Gaudy’ always pops into mind. A space with bold color representation, an overkill interjection of texture, and the overuse of modern or untraditional shape forms are all factors that would encompass that title.

‘Simple’ would generally refer to the use of light, neutral color schemes in combination with small interjections of light texture and straight lined shapes. Simple, in my opinion is the basic ingredient to a successful recipe of design. Begin simply and build to your comfort level of complexity. This will not be an area that will flow naturally with you when you begin learning interior design. It will more then likely become an understanding that you will develop over time and exposure to different aspects of design.

To wind things up, the road to learning interior design is filled with information and visual perspectives that will open both your eyes and your mind to an entirely different world. Observation is the key to better understanding this world. Open your eyes and begin the adventure!

Babies, babies, babies-yes the topic of this article is based on interior design for nurseries. The new arrival of a baby brings a time of thankfulness and joy into all parents’ lives. It also brings to mind an important question: where will the nursery be?!? Once the actual space has been decided upon, the next concern will be color scheme and furniture. Before you make all of your choices concerning the new arrival’s bedroom quarters, keep these important tips in mind.

To begin with, the gender of a baby will may influence the color scheme used in the room and this will not be something that will be able to be determined right away so either neutral colors should be used or the painting of the walls and purchasing of the accessories should be prolonged. Keep in mind not to wait too long if it is your intention to paint the room. You will want to be sure to allow any noxious fumes time to disperse before bringing baby home and actually using the nursery. The safety of the child should be one of the main elements involved in the planning of interior design for nurseries. Keep this aspect in mind as you make every choice involved with your design.

Fortunately for the early birds, the traditional ‘pink for girls and blue for boys’ theme is not the happening thing in interior design for nurseries these days. Sure, pink is still associated with girls and blue is still normally in tune with boys design but the strict adherence to these rules is no longer the norm. A complimentary mixture of these colors is the basis of most contemporary designs. There is no reason to limit the possibilities of colors used in interior design for nurseries based on old traditions. Exposure to color in the nursery is your baby’s first environmental experience and it has been confirmed by doctors and scientists alike that this exposure aids in your baby’s development.

Stenciling is a method that has been and still is very popular in interior design for nurseries. Almost any of your neighborhood crafting stores should have a sizeable supply of stencil designs that you can easily use to create a ceiling-level or mid-level border around your baby’s nursery. If you are feeling a little more ambitious, there are many more intricate nursery themed designs that you can purchase in stores or even online that will require a little more time but produce astonishingly impressive designs. If this is still too little work for you, then go all out and create your own stencil patterns by sketching them first onto mat board and then cutting them out with an Exacto knife.

Once your walls are complete, it is time to begin making decisions on the furniture for the room. If you have heirloom baby furniture, let me make a suggestion. Don’t use it. Keep this furniture for display purposes and purchase new furniture. I make this suggestion for two reasons. First of all, baby furniture that was made prior to the 1960’s did not have to adhere to any safety regulations. While your father’s philosophy of ‘they don’t make ‘em like this anymore’ might apply to cars, it does not seem like excellent advice concerning children’s furniture. Secondly, even if the furniture were safe, there is a good possibility that it will be damaged or broken during use. The best bet in any case would be to save these treasures to pass along to your child when they are older and to invest in a new set of furniture for use in your nursery.

After the major choices of furniture that cater to the new arrival’s needs have been made, it is important to remember to include a space for mom or dad to sit during those sleepless nights! Rather then purchasing another traditional yet impractical item for the nursery, try considering your alternatives to the long-backed, hard wooden rocker. A comfortable alternate choice might be a spacious, comfortable recliner. You will appreciate this advice at four o’clock one morning as you roll over and try to envision how you would feel sleeping in a rocker around then.

Accessories can make nurseries come together in a wonderful, and useable way. Never focus on the visual aspect of an accessory for a nursery before you consider its usefulness. You will find out soon that practical items such as diaper holders, changing tables, and so forth are much more appreciated then aesthetic items such as ceramics or stuffed animals. The purchase of stuffed animals brings forth another important safety issue. Be sure not to purchase items with small parts or pieces on them which the baby can choke on.

Once all of the necessary and useable accessories have been purchased for the baby’s room, then feel free to go out and invest in some purely decorative items which you can treasure at a future time. This is, after all, a time you will remember and cherish for the rest of your life.

When decorating or making decorating decisions for new homes, it is important to remember that your major decisions could affect decorating choices for quite a long period of time. Commitment to bold or unusual color treatments before you have actually had the opportunity to consider how such changes will coordinate with your furniture placement is not very advisable in this type of situation. In any case, the best advice you could receive while planning interior design for new homes is to make mediocre, undramatic design choices to begin that you can alter at a later time if you choose to do so.

This may seem like very unusual advice concerning interior design for new homes especially coming from someone who is working within the design industry—but there is good explanation for this reasoning. A large, open space without viewing or visualizing any furniture content within that space is quite easy to get a little carried away with while making structural changes. Also, keep in mind that by using very bold or dramatic designer interior colors on the walls you might be closing off your future alternative color choices to those that will cover the bright color therefore eliminating any possibility of using neutral colors without major restructuring of wall surfaces.

Wallpaper is another such choice that you might reconsider using while building interior design for new homes. Again, removing wallpaper and resurfacing the surface is often times quite a headache that can be avoided by using other alternatives for creative wall finishing. A great alternative for wallpaper that adds a great texture to the wall surfaces would be a finishing technique such as faux finishing, sponging, or stenciling. These choices (and many more like them) offer you a variety of substitutes that are equally appealing and much easier to change then more permanent solutions such as wallpaper. If you absolutely must have wallpaper in any of the rooms, try using a border to achieve the look you’re going for instead of covering the entire wall surface.

When painting walls, if you apply a few well known interior design tips and tricks to your method, you will be pleasantly surprised in the overall effects when complete. For example, brighten up small or dark rooms with light wall colors. Add character and direction to larger areas by defining them with contrasting colors and textures. Bold or stark color panels can also provide a defining feature to an area that you can showcase wall pieces on when you are ready to accessorize.

Once the walls have been treated in your new home, the next item on the agenda while planning interior design for new homes would be dynamic placement of your hanging accessories such as mirrors, pictures, and art. Do not over clutter walls. Make good choices and place such items in key places by establishing focal points or presentation areas that will flatter the rest of your design.

Interior design for new homes can be a tricky process. There is a good possibility that the area pertained in your new home will be slightly larger or smaller then the space in your previous home. It is this reason that planning placement and theme of each space in your new home is so vitally important to successful interior design of new homes. Be sure to measure widths of furniture and doorways before moving day comes in order to avoid hassle while getting the furniture into your new living space. Take careful notice of any moving activity that occurs into and around your new home. Careless moving errors can disfigure floors and walls and create flaws in your new house before you have even begun living there.

Placement of furniture in new homes is one of the key aspects of unique interior design for new homes. The old philosophy of creating larger spaces (this is seen especially in living areas and rec rooms) by lining the furniture along the walls is true at times although at other times (again, especially in recreational-type rooms), dividing the room into two separate spaces by positioning furniture towards separate focal points therefore adding space and versatility to the area as well as enlarging it.

The most important matter of concern when designing or planning interior design for new homes is to build an environment that caters to the individuals living there. Creating a space that is accommodating to each person’s lifestyles is the general principle of new home design.

Once the basic theme has been decided upon, the next major set of choices will be what colors to base those themes on. I always advise clients that it is better to fit the color with the space than the person in this situation. Does that sound unfair? Many clients will associate their first color selection with their favorite color. A favorite color and wall paint sometimes don’t mix very well. Traditional interior design motivates the color choices more towards colors that match the room’s needs. This is so because very often you will find that even if a client is less then enthusiastic about the color selection, after the room has been painted and they have had the chance to see it, they change their minds quickly. Try to offer this type of solution to your client in an encouraging, helpful way rather then with a know-it-all attitude. If they are still not very enthusiastic, try to show them pictures of similar colors in catalogs to give them a better feel of how it will look. Catalogs and magazines are an endless resource for things like this because it offers people a little insight into how designs play out.

All right, you have a theme in mind and a palette of colors to work from. What’s next in traditional interior design? It honestly depends on the magnitude and scope of the project. Choose your wall treatments and get those out of the way if you intend on making any flooring changes. Don’t become hasty and have new flooring installed or the existing flooring refurnished only to paint over the top of it while applying your wall treatment. Once the walls have been complete and allowed time to properly dry, then is the time to make flooring changes.

Flooring! Traditional interior design offers so many choices for all types of flooring; it is best to base this choice upon the needs and lifestyle of your clients. If they have children, suggest that easily washable, flat surfaced flooring is used with the compliment of a large rug in any recreational rooms. These rooms will be the rooms that are mostly used the most often and are danger areas for anyone with kids or children. Explain to them that the rug is easily replaced but carpeting is not.

When the ‘canvas’ is ready (the bare bones of the room), it is time for you to treat any windows before you begin moving furniture in and things get crowded. For small rooms, open them up by adding more light using sheer window coverings. The same idea with dark rooms that need a little extra light. Make ‘short’ rooms tall using window-to-floor curtains or draperies in contrast to short furniture. Traditional interior design includes MANY alternatives to window covering that will fit any home. Keep in mind while doing this the activity on the outside of the window as much as you to the appearance on the inside of it. If it is a very open window and the setting of the home does not offer much privacy, they will probably want privacy window coverings. After your windows are complete, hang any wall accessories before proceeding to the next step.

Time to bring in the furniture! A few key rules to remember while positioning furniture in traditional interior design: first, create lines and continuity. Second, be sure to create adequate walking space. Third, don’t over clutter. And fourth, be creative.

Once your furniture is in place and has been ‘tested’, time to accessorize. Traditional interior design normally does this by placing a few instrumental accessories into place. Simplicity is elegant and too much accessories can lead to an uncomfortable room. Try to purchase well-defined items that can even make great conversational pieces. If the homeowners are hands-on and involved, get them to add personal touches by creating an accessory themselves.

Traditional interior design is a catch-all that incorporates the workability and usability with the beauty of a room. Achieve the perfect balance by properly combining these items and you will be successful!

Interior design for couples is one of the hottest, most popular types of design these days. In the past, men have not taken the initiative to actually be involved in the interior design of their homes, often resulting in very female orientated, elegant designs that are beautiful although not exactly appealing to the Saturday afternoon football crew. This type of design is often beautiful and can be ideal in certain situations. Although, more and more men today are interested in helping to decide what their home looks like on the inside!

Beware! Interior design for couples can put you (the designer) into a bit of a hot seat in the battle of the sexes. Here are a few tips on how to avoid disaster. First of all, always communicate with and listen to what both parties involved envision as being their dream space. Many times one party or the other will be much more dominate in the planning and conversations then the other. Take note of this and pay special attention to the quiet party by asking the questions and making sure to offer them the opportunity to express themselves. In this aspect of interior design for couples, you are the mediator. Take both sides into careful consideration before doing any planning.

During planning stages, again, be sure to include both parties in the process and if one person is noticeably quiet during the conversation, don’t be shy to point things out that might be important to them. This way, you tend to buffer any arguments or resentment that may arise from your interjection of a neutral opinion or thoughts. If there are any problems, remind them both that your vision is to create a space that is pleasant and acceptable to both of them and that interior design for couples can be unpleasant but it is very easy to work within both person’s boundaries in order to ensure that everyone is happy with the outcome.

If you see certain situations that you, as a designer can find ways to compromise in order to fit things into both peoples’ expectations this is key. Also, stress to both parties involved that a little give and a little take is vital when discussing and planning interior design for couples and that while they won’t always reach the same conclusion, if they both make some trade offs it will create an environment they are both comfortable in.

If all else fails, encourage both people when making references to certain aspects of one another’s design ideas that they are good ideas that can be compatible with the other’s thoughts. Whenever dealing with interior design for couples, a certain ‘he says, she says’ attitude is likely to arise at some point and it is your job as the designer to see that things work out smoothly and in the best interest of both people.

Color and furniture are normally the main items that are disagreed upon in interior design for couples. Suggest to the female counterpart that the leather sofa her husband is interested in can be a very classic and comfortable edition to any living space. Explain to her husband that the peach color she is looking for can actually be considered a light beige. You would be surprised what miracles a little bit of convincing can do when carried out in the right manner.

If neither party is willing to compromise, I have seen for instances when the designer actually had both of the couple write down their design needs/wants and do a point by point comparison/bargaining session that allowed each person an equal amount of yes and nos. Sound ridiculously childish? Be prepared!
